Opening Dohās
The two invocatory couplets that open the Chalisa — a salutation to the Guru and a prayer to Hanuman.
shriguru charan saroj raj, nij manu mukuru sudhari
With the dust of my Guru’s lotus feet I cleanse the mirror of my mind,
baranau raghubar bimal jasu, jo dayaku phal chari
and recount the pure glory of the noble Raghu (Rāma), which bestows the four fruits of life.
buddhihin tanu janike, sumirau pavan kumar
Knowing my body devoid of wisdom, I call to mind the son of the Wind,
bal budhi bidya dehu mohi, harahu kales bikar
grant me strength, intellect, and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and impurities.
