Rudrashtakam

हे ईशान! मैं आपको नमस्कार करता हूँ — जो निर्वाण-स्वरूप, सर्वव्यापक विभु और ब्रह्म तथा वेद के स्वरूप हैं।

I bow to you, Lord Īśāna — you whose very form is liberation, the all-pervading and omnipresent one, the essence of Brahman and of the Vedas.

जो अपने आप में स्थित, निर्गुण, निर्विकल्प और इच्छारहित हैं — उस चिदाकाश-स्वरूप और आकाश में वास करने वाले को मैं भजता हूँ।

Self-existent, without attributes, beyond all alternatives, free of desire — I worship him who is the sky of consciousness and who dwells in space itself.

जो निराकार हैं, ओंकार के मूल हैं, तुरीय अवस्था हैं, और वाणी, ज्ञान तथा इन्द्रियों से परे हैं — उन ईश गिरीश को,

Formless, the root of Oṃ, the fourth state beyond waking, dream and sleep, past speech and knowledge and the senses — the Lord, the master of the mountain,

जो कराल हैं, महाकाल के भी काल हैं, फिर भी कृपालु हैं, गुणों के धाम और संसार से परे हैं — उन्हें मैं नमन करता हूँ।

terrible in aspect, the death even of Death, yet full of grace, the abode of every virtue, beyond the round of birth — to him I bow.

जो हिमालय के समान गौर वर्ण और गम्भीर हैं, और जिनका श्री-शरीर करोड़ों कामदेवों-सी प्रभा लिए है,

Fair as the snow-clad mountain and grave in bearing, his radiant body shining with the splendour of ten million Kāmadevas,

जिनके मस्तक पर लहराती हुई सुन्दर गंगा शोभित हैं, ललाट पर बाल-चन्द्रमा दमकता है और कण्ठ में सर्प सुशोभित है।

on his head the lovely Gaṅgā tossing her waves, on his brow the gleaming crescent moon, and about his throat the serpent.

जिनके कुण्डल हिल रहे हैं, भौंहें सुन्दर और नेत्र विशाल हैं, मुख प्रसन्न है, कण्ठ नीला है, और जो दयालु हैं —

His earrings swaying, his brows fine and his wide eyes beautiful, his face serene, his throat blue, and he full of compassion —

जो सिंह-चर्म का वस्त्र और मुण्डों की माला धारण करते हैं — उन प्रिय शंकर, सबके नाथ को मैं भजता हूँ।

robed in the lion's hide and garlanded with skulls — him I worship, beloved Śaṅkara, the Lord of all.

जो प्रचण्ड, श्रेष्ठ, प्रगल्भ और परमेश्वर हैं; अखण्ड, अजन्मा और करोड़ों सूर्यों के समान प्रकाशमान हैं;

Fierce, exalted, bold, the supreme Lord; undivided, unborn, blazing with the light of ten million suns;

जो तीनों शूलों (तापों) को जड़ से मिटाने वाले और हाथ में त्रिशूल धारण करने वाले हैं — उन भवानी-पति को, जो केवल भाव से प्राप्त होते हैं, मैं भजता हूँ।

uprooter of the three piercing sorrows, trident in hand — I worship the consort of Bhavānī, who is reached by love alone.

जो कलाओं और काल से परे, कल्याण-स्वरूप और कल्प के अन्त में संहार करने वाले हैं; जो सदा सज्जनों को आनन्द देने वाले और त्रिपुर के नाशक हैं;

Beyond all reckoning of time, auspiciousness itself, who brings the aeon to its close; ever the giver of joy to the good, the destroyer of Tripura;

जो चिदानन्द के पुंज और मोह को हर लेने वाले हैं — हे कामदेव के शत्रु, हे प्रभो, प्रसन्न होइए, प्रसन्न होइए।

the very mass of consciousness and bliss, stealer of delusion — be gracious, be gracious, O Lord, foe of Manmatha.

हे उमानाथ! जब तक मनुष्य आपके चरण-कमलों का भजन नहीं करते — न इस लोक में, न परलोक में —

O Lord of Umā, so long as people do not worship your lotus feet, whether in this world or the next,

तब तक उन्हें न सुख मिलता है, न शान्ति, और न संतापों का नाश होता है। हे प्रभो, हे सब भूतों में वास करने वाले, प्रसन्न होइए।

until then they find neither happiness nor peace nor any end to their anguish. Be gracious, O Lord, dweller within all beings.

मैं न योग जानता हूँ, न जप, न पूजा — हे शम्भु, मैं तो सदा-सर्वदा केवल आपको नमस्कार करता हूँ।

I know neither yoga nor recitation nor the rites of worship — O Śambhu, I only bow to you, always and in every way.

बुढ़ापे, जन्म और दुखों के समूह से तपते हुए मुझ आपद्ग्रस्त की रक्षा कीजिए — हे ईश, हे शम्भो, मैं आपको नमस्कार करता हूँ।

Scorched by old age, by birth, and by the flood of sorrows, protect me in my distress — I bow to you, O Lord Śambhu.

यह रुद्राष्टक एक विप्र द्वारा शिवजी को प्रसन्न करने के लिए कहा गया।

This Rudrāṣṭaka was uttered by a brāhmaṇa for the pleasing of Hara.

जो मनुष्य इसे भक्तिपूर्वक पढ़ते हैं, उन पर शम्भु प्रसन्न होते हैं।

Upon those who recite it with devotion, Śambhu bestows his grace.
